The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is the internationally recognized training program designed to prepare dive professionals to become confident, knowledgeable, and successful instructors.

The IDC consists of two components:

• Assistant Instructor (AI) Course
• Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) Program

Most candidates complete both portions before attending the PADI Instructor Examination (IE), the final step toward earning the prestigious PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certification.

If you successfully complete only the Assistant Instructor course, you'll earn the PADI Assistant Instructor rating and can continue to the OWSI program whenever you're ready.

Already an instructor with another recreational scuba training organization? You may qualify to enroll directly in the OWSI program, allowing you to transition your professional credentials into the PADI system.

Course Prerequisites

To enroll in the PADI Instructor Development Course, you must:

• Be a certified PADI Divemaster (or qualifying leadership-level certification).
• Have been a certified diver for at least six months.
• Have a minimum of 60 logged dives to begin the IDC.
• Have 100 logged dives before attending the Instructor Examination (IE).
• Hold current Emergency First Response (CPR & First Aid) training completed within the previous 24 months.
• Submit a medical examination signed by a physician within the past 12 months.

Candidates must also become an Emergency First Response Instructor, which can be completed during your Instructor Development Course.

• Minimum of five days of classroom, confined water, and open water instruction
