As the first portion of the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), the Assistant Instructor program prepares experienced divers to become professional educators within the world's largest and most respected diver training organization.

At Orange County Divers, you'll learn directly from experienced PADI Course Directors who are committed to developing confident, knowledgeable, and successful dive professionals.

Whether your goal is to teach locally, work at an international dive resort, or continue toward becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, this course provides the foundation for your professional journey.

What You'll Learn

The Assistant Instructor Course develops your instructional abilities while introducing you to the PADI educational system.

Throughout the program you'll learn:

  • The PADI System of Diver Education
  • Learning, instruction, and teaching techniques
  • Dive theory review
  • Risk management and diver safety
  • Conducting classroom presentations
  • Confined water teaching skills
  • Student evaluation techniques
  • Professional ethics and responsibilities

  • Preparing for the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program

Successful completion earns you the PADI Assistant Instructor certification and prepares you to continue toward full PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor status.

Course Prerequisites

To enroll, you must:

  • Be a certified PADI Divemaster (or qualifying leadership certification from another recognized organization)
  • Have been a certified diver for at least six months
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a minimum of 60 logged dives to begin the course
  • Have 100 logged dives before attending the PADI Instructor Examination (IE)
  • Hold current Emergency First Response (CPR & First Aid) training completed within the previous 24 months
  • Submit a medical examination signed by a physician within the last 12 months

Candidates must also become an Emergency First Response Instructor, which may be completed during your instructor training.
